What is RECESSION???????

I believe that a true economic recession can only be confirmed if GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth is negative for a period of two or more consecutive quarters.

The roots of a recession and its true starting point actually rest in the several quarters of positive but slowing growth before the recession cycle really begins. Often in a mild recession the first quarter of negative growth is followed by slight positive growth, then negative growth returns and the recession trend continues.

In economics, the term recession is generally used to describe a situation in which a country’s GDP, or gross domestic product, sustains a negative growth factor for at least 2 consecutive quarters.  I say generally because recession can be defined differently by different economists.  Just as there is an agency to define the measure of inflation; the official agency in charge of declaring that the economy is in a state of recession is the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).  NBER’s definition of recession is a bit more vague than the standard one that was described above; they define recession as a “significant decline in economic activity lasting more than a few months”.  For this reason, the official designation of recession may not come until after we are in a recession for six months or even longer.

Some economists also suggest that a recession occurs when the natural growth rate in GDP is less than the average of 2%.

Reason Behind RECESSION:

This is another staunchly debated topic; but the general consensus is that a recession is primarily caused by the actions taken to control the money supply in the economy.  The Federal Reserve is responsible for maintaining an ideal balance between money supply, interest rates, and inflation.  When the Fed loses balance in this equation, the economy can spiral out of control, forcing it to correct itself.  This is precisely what we have seen in 2007, where the Feds monetary policy of injecting tremendous amounts of money supply into the money market has kept interest rates lower while inflation continues to rise.  This, coupled with relaxed policies in lending practices making it easy to borrow money; the economic activity became unsustainable resulting in the economy coming to a near halt.

This set of circumstances, coupled with the ability of people to get access to greater amounts of loan money due to extremely lax loan practices, creates a cycle of unsustainable economic activity that will eventually grind an economy to a near halted existence. You could also say that a recession is actually caused by factors that might stunt the growth that is available from the short term benefits to an economy that can be brought about by such things like spiking oil prices or even war. And while these are very short term in nature usually, they have been known to correct themselves quicker than the full blown recessions that have happened in the past.

The United States suffered its first recession back in the years between 1797 and 1800. This disrupted commercial real estate markets in the U.S. Britain’s economy was in a strained state already, because it was fighting France in the French Revolutionary wars at the time. The next recession confirmed occurred in the years between 1807 and 1814, and was called the Depression of 1807. This depression was primarily caused by the Embargo Act of 1807, signed into effect by then President Thomas Jefferson. This act destroyed a good part of the shipping related industries, and it was fought hard by the Federalists, who allowed smuggling to take effect in New England as a result of the Act.

The Panic of 1819 soon followed. This was considered the first major financial crisis to unveil itself before the relatively new U.S. economy. This panic brought with it widespread foreclosures, failing banks, huge unemployment rates, and a gigantic slump in manufacturing and agriculture that caused havoc among Americans. This recession also marked the end of great economic expansion that had taken place following the War of 1812.

Economic recessions in America continued with the Panic of 1837. This recession can really be attributed to failing banks, and to the lack of confidence people had in paper currency, which was becoming popular at the time. Banks stopped paying out in gold and silver, which really took its toll on American confidence.

The Panic of 1857 followed not long after. With the failure of the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Company (which at the time was one of the biggest in the United States) came the explosion of a European confidence bubble in the U.S. This greatly affected the railroads and U.S. banks, causing over 5,000 businesses in America to fail in the first year of the panic alone. Unemployment rose, and protest meetings became popular.

Recessions continued to plague not only America, but the rest of the world as well. Considered part of the natural cycle of the modern economic system, no one can really escape recession in the long run. Countries like Germany, the U.K., China, and Japan have all had trouble with recessions. In fact, economists say that Germany is in for what might be the biggest recession in all of German history not too far down the road. Japanese economic recession has also played a huge part in their history. Japanese recession, just like economic recessions in America, can be linked to the dreadful cycle of imbalanced inflation, money supply, and interest rates that keep things in balance, rolling, and functioning properly.

In the year 2001, the early 2000s recession hit America. The collapse of the dot.com bubble was truly the cause of these recessions, as well as the attacks that occurred on September 11th on the World Trade Center Towers in New York City. Accounting scandals also ran rampant, contributing to the overall downward financial spiral that America faced. Everyone remembers the attacks on America’s soil, and nobody will forget how, despite economic trouble, the attacks brought Americans together, more united than ever. And with that kind of perseverance, America was led out of that struggle to a new future of prosperity.

And lastly, America has been hit by what has been called the Late 2000s recession. The collapse of the housing market really set this one off on a bad note, and it, coupled with bank collapses in the U.S. and Europe, have caused consumer confidence and credit availability to plummet to new lows. But for now, the modern economic cycle again comes around to purge itself of the problems put on it by humanity, and unfortunately, that purge is known to us as recession.

The players were presented in lots of six, with the marquee names first to go under the hammer.

Top of the list was India’s one-day captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, signed for an astonishing $1.5m, $1.1m more than his reserve price, by the Chennai franchise owned by Indian Cements. Chennai also captured Muttiah Muralitharan for $600,000, well above his $250,000 reserve price.
Franchises have a minimum spend of $3.3m and a maximum of $5m for their squads, with players signed for an initial three years, but the restrictions do not appear to have occurred to some franchise owners.

Mumbai is already guaranteed the services of Sachin Tendulkar, who under IPL regulations must be paid a salary amounting to 115% of the next highest-paid player in the franchise
